La Laguna Hosts ‘Las Noches del Patrimonio’ During Fiestas del Cristo
La Laguna is set to be the only city in Spain’s UNESCO World Heritage Cities group to celebrate ‘Las Noches del Patrimonio’ on 18 and 19 September, coinciding with its Fiestas del Cristo.
The official programme, to be revealed on Tuesday, will feature internationally renowned local artist Yapci Ramos. She will kick off the ‘Vive Patrimonio’ section with two impactful events: the ‘Monumenta Performance’ and workshops conducted by Ramos and choreographer María Ibarretxe, focusing on the memory and heritage of the Canary Islands’ sole World Heritage City through a contemporary lens.
Cultural Heritage Councillor Adolfo Cordobés stated that ‘Las Noches del Patrimonio’ offers a unique chance to highlight the city’s historical and cultural wealth, engaging the community in this UNESCO-recognised locale. He emphasised the event’s focus on revitalising historical spaces and showcasing local talent like Ramos, who brings a global perspective to her roots.
Ramos expressed that ‘Monumenta’ is born from a desire to connect with enduring local memories. Working in La Concepción, a site linked to the city’s colonial past, she aims to activate heritage through personal experience and collective memory.
The ‘Monumenta Performance: Body, Memory, and Heritage’ workshops will take place on 15 and 16 September at Casa Anchieta. With sessions at 10:00, 12:00, and 19:00, the free workshops are limited to 20 participants each and require advance registration via email.
The performance will occur on 19 September in La Concepción Square, featuring nine dancers embodying nine guanche identities. Ramos directs the performance, which seeks to transform historical and cultural narratives into a living experience.
‘Las Noches del Patrimonio’ is an initiative of the Group of World Heritage Cities in Spain, designed to promote conservation, cultural dissemination, and citizen participation. This year marks a first for La Laguna as its celebration takes place on different dates, while other cities will join in the weekend of 12 and 13 September.
The full schedule for ‘Las Noches del Patrimonio 2026’ will be unveiled next Tuesday, detailing activities across various historical spaces that will be open in the evening. This advance notice allows for early registration for Ramos’s workshops, setting the tone for a vibrant edition focused on contemporary creation and community involvement.
