Over 4,700 patients are waiting for appointments with specialists at the Doctor José Molina Orosa Hospital in Lanzarote, marking the highest number in a decade. This figure represents a staggering 70.3% increase compared to last year, according to data from the Canary Island Health Service published for June 2026.
The previous record was set in December 2024, when 4,048 people were on waiting lists. This increase also outstrips the 2,950 patients who were awaiting specialist consultations in June 2019, which was the highest figure recorded for that month until now.
Across the Canary Islands, more than 158,000 individuals are currently awaiting appointments with doctors. The most sought-after specialties in Lanzarote include Gynaecology, with 625 patients waiting, followed by General and Digestive Surgery (485 patients), Rehabilitation (455), and Dermatology (419).
Patients are also facing delays in complementary tests. For instance, the average wait for a simple ultrasound in Lanzarote is two and a half months (68 days), with 272 people currently waiting for this procedure as of June this year. Other tests are similarly delayed, with waits of nearly two months for a CT scan (52 days) and MRIs (around 44.9 days). The average wait for a mammogram is over three weeks (22 days), while endoscopies typically take about a month and three days (34 days) to schedule.
