The San Bartolomé Council is undertaking improvements to various rural roads in the municipality to enhance access for farmers and livestock owners. This initiative aims to remedy the extensive damage caused by recent rains and continuous use, ensuring these paths are safe and navigable.
The project, funded by the Cabildo de Lanzarote through subsidies for rural infrastructure enhancement, includes specific upgrades based on each road’s needs. Planned improvements involve reshaping paths, adding gravel, and levelling surfaces where required.
Initial work will focus on rural routes such as La Majorera, La Quinta, Montaña Blanca, and several others. Mayor Isidro Pérez emphasised the importance of maintaining these roads to support the agricultural sector and facilitate everyday access for local residents.
Pérez noted, “This initial intervention addresses urgent needs, especially following the recent rains. We aim to establish a continuous plan for progressively improving the rural road network.”
Councillor for Agriculture, Alexis Hernández, explained that they have prioritised roads frequently used by farmers and livestock keepers. “We’re not just repairing damage; we want to maintain these ways in optimal condition to support the primary sector’s daily work,” he said.
Hernández reiterated that this is just the first step in a long-term improvement plan, ensuring that they’ll respond to ongoing concerns from the agricultural community about other paths.
Rural roads are vital for San Bartolomé’s agricultural activities, connecting farms to key access points and ensuring efficient transport for vehicles and machinery. The Council is committed to preserving and enhancing these infrastructure links, targeting the worst-affected areas first while adapting improvements to meet local requirements.
