Members of the Maulli2 Cat Association gathered on Thursday, 3 September, at 9:00 AM outside the Municipal Office in La Graciosa to demand action for the island’s cats and their colonies. The group expressed concerns about the current plight of the felines and stressed the need for specific, responsible, and sustainable measures to ensure their wellbeing while promoting good neighbourly relations and protecting the island’s natural environment.
With the slogan “Solution for the Cats of La Graciosa!”, Maulli2 called for proper management of these cat colonies, suggesting measures like sterilisation, health monitoring, identification of animals, and appropriate regulation of their care and feeding.
As part of this citizen initiative, Maulli2 also registered signatures supporting their petition to the Teguise Town Hall. These signatures reflect public backing for active involvement from relevant authorities to collaborate with animal protection groups and local residents in finding an ethical and organised solution for managing cat colonies.
Maulli2 believes that dialogue and cooperation are essential to avoid conflict and strike a balance between animal welfare, community living, and the conservation of the island’s biodiversity. The association urges officials to consider the collected signatures and hopes this initiative leads to a concrete action plan tailored to the specific needs of La Graciosa.
The Maulli2 Association emphasised that their goal is not to create conflict but to foster a lasting and effective solution. “We want cats in La Graciosa to be managed responsibly while ensuring our fauna is protected and a harmonious coexistence is maintained,” said María de la Paz Hernández Morales, president of Maulli2. The association is grateful for the support received and encourages all involved parties to work together towards a beneficial resolution for the island.
