Nearly 58% of residents in the Canary Islands are struggling to make ends meet, according to the Consumer Confidence Index for the second quarter of 2026.

Of that figure, 35.6% report facing some financial difficulties, while 23.2% experience considerable or severe hardship. In contrast, only 9.5% of individuals aged 18 and above find it easy to manage their finances, with 27.8% stating they encounter some challenges. A further 3.9% did not disclose their economic situation.

Economic strain varies across the islands and their regions. The North of Tenerife reports the highest level of difficulty, with 29% of residents indicating they face significant hardship, increasing to 64% when including those with minor difficulties. The metropolitan area of Tenerife (42.8%) and the northern region of Gran Canaria (41.9%) show the highest percentages of people who manage to get by comfortably.

Looking ahead, the index reveals a pessimistic outlook. Only 15.8% of residents believe their household economic situation will improve in the next six months, while more than half (51.1%) expect no change. Residents of Lanzarote are the most optimistic, with 21.5% anticipating improvement, compared to just 10.4% in North Tenerife.

The Consumer Confidence Index for the second quarter stands at 64.3 points, down by 6.5 points from the previous quarter, the lowest level in five years. Both components of the index declined: current situation fell by 6.2 points to 61.6, while expectations dropped by 6.8 points to 67.
