Tenerife Council Allocates €250,000 for Traditional Folk Groups
Tenerife’s Council has announced a €250,000 funding initiative aimed at supporting cultural associations and non-profit entities with stable folk groups on the island. The funding will facilitate the purchase of traditional musical instruments and hand-crafted costumes essential to Canarian heritage.
The initiative was unveiled on Tuesday in the Noble Hall, attended by Efraín Medina, the Council’s Employment, Education, and Youth Minister, alongside Noel González, head of the Technical Employment Service.
This funding scheme seeks to promote and preserve the cultural heritage of the Canary Islands, bolstering the activities of folk groups as they transmit popular traditions, while also reinforcing the artisanal sector involved in creating these instruments and garments.
Efraín Medina stated, “These grants represent a commitment to safeguarding a vital part of our identity. Folk groups are key ambassadors of Tenerife’s and the Canary Islands’ traditions, and this funding will provide them with the necessary resources to continue their important work.”
He further emphasised that traditional costumes made by local artisans and instruments created in the Canary Islands are crucial in keeping alive crafts that are integral to the region’s cultural heritage. This initiative supports those who preserve these traditions on stage and those who sustain them from their workshops.
The grants will cover the cost of traditional instruments, costumes, and the materials needed for their creation, enabling folk groups to enhance their activities.
Funding may cover up to 80% of eligible costs, with a maximum of €10,000 available per recipient. Each group must contribute the remaining percentage through their own funds or additional financing, and a minimum investment of €2,000 is required to qualify.
Applications will be accepted for 30 days following the announcement in the Provincial Official Gazette, with submissions processed online via the Tenerife Council’s electronic platform.
