Roadworks Begin in Santa Cruz de Tenerife on August 10
Santa Cruz de Tenerife will start road resurfacing on Islas Canarias Avenue on Monday, August 10, causing full traffic closures, diversions, and changes to the route of bus line 904 operated by TITSA. The works are expected to last until August 31 and will be carried out in seven phases to minimise disruption.
The first phase will affect the stretch up to Obispo Pérez Cáceres street, closing Salamanca street. Drivers are advised to use alternative routes, including La Asunción Avenue and Belgium Avenue.
The local council has allocated €269,110.77 for this project, part of its Urban Impulse plan, aimed at renewing the pavement of this key route in the capital.
24-Hour Road Closures
The works will take place on the two ascendant lanes alongside the tram platform, between Rambla de Santa Cruz and Venezuela Avenue. Each phase will result in total closures round the clock, with parking bans enforced in the affected areas.
Alternative routes will be signposted, and at times, half of the road may remain open depending on the progress of the works. During the first phase, traffic will be diverted through La Asunción and Belgium Avenue.
In the second phase, work will extend to the roundabout at Belgium Avenue, with the first section and Salamanca street expected to reopen. The third phase will introduce a temporary half-lane roundabout near the roundabout to maintain traffic flow.
After the completion of the first lane, the project will move to the second lane, which will also be divided into four phases.
Changes to Bus Line 904
Public transport will also be impacted. From 7:30 AM on Monday, August 10, until 7:30 AM on Wednesday, August 12, bus line 904 will temporarily change its route towards Cuesta Piedra. Normally running from Weyler Square to Cuesta Piedra, buses will instead depart from Weyler Square and travel via 25 de Julio Avenue, Viera y Clavijo, Horacio Nelson, Los Sueños, Domingo J. Manrique, and the Javier del Loño bridge before resuming their regular route.
Stops at Álvarez de Lugo, Rambla Pulido, and Salamanca will be temporarily suspended, but passengers can use alternate stops at Plaza de los Patos, Sagrado Corazón, and Horacio Nelson.
Further adjustments to public transport will be announced as the work progresses.
Extensive Road Resurfacing Planned
The resurfacing project includes demolishing 9,164 square metres of road and removing 1,750 square metres of cobblestones. Following this, 1,319 tonnes of asphalt mix will be laid to renew the pavement. New road markings will be installed once the resurfacing is complete.
The council urges drivers in the area to pay attention to temporary signs and use alternative routes while the works are ongoing.
