Adolfo Santana, a renowned journalist from the Canary Islands, has been posthumously named Adopted Son of Valsequillo, recognising his significant contributions to preserving local traditions. Santana, who passed away in 2015, began his career at the Diario de Las Palmas and passionately documented the stories of the island’s most humble residents.

Santana was particularly dedicated to promoting the tradition of the Rancho de Ánimas, having familial ties to its history. He famously interviewed the last eyewitness of the dance of the Pámpano Roto in Guayadeque, an experience highlighted in the RTVE programme Raíces Isleñas.

The Valsequillo council has presented this honour as a tribute to individuals and groups who have played vital roles in the community’s progress. In total, 21 people are being recognised for their dedication to Valsequillo.

Santana’s versatility saw him cover politics, local affairs, and sports, establishing a prominent presence in various media outlets, including Canarias7 and multiple radio stations. Within the community, he is remembered fondly, with a park named in his honour and various awards recognising his impactful work.

In 2016, a year after his death, his family published Retazos de Zafra, showcasing his last writings and preserving his legacy for future generations.
