New Walking Route to Link Historic Landmarks in Arrecife with Government Support
The Lanzarote Council has unveiled plans for the new Cultural Heritage Route in Arrecife. This initiative, backed by the Canary Islands Government, aims to create a pedestrian walkway over a kilometre long that will connect several iconic historical buildings in the capital.
The announcement took place on Friday during a meeting attended by Council President Oswaldo Betancort, Regional Culture Minister Migdalia Machín, Arrecife’s Urban Planning Councillor Maciot Cabrera, and project architect Antonio María Zamora.
Connecting Museums and Historical Sites
The planned route will link Casa Fajardo, Los Cabrerones, and El Mercadillo. The council has purchased these properties to convert them into museums and interpretation centres.
“This project helps us view heritage as a link between Arrecife’s history, present, and future,” stated Betancort.
Machín emphasised the importance of reclaiming the city’s collective memory through its urban environment, while Cabrera highlighted that Arrecife’s modernisation requires the protection and visibility of its historical heritage.
Design Inspired by Traditional Architecture
Antonio María Zamora explained that the proposal includes comprehensive improvements to the urban landscape, focusing on pavements, lighting, greenery, street furniture, and wall treatments. The design will draw inspiration from the island’s traditional architecture and the artistic legacy of César Manrique.
