Tenerife Council Commends Martiánez Swimming Club for National Success
Young athletes from the Martiánez Swimming Club were honoured at the Tenerife Aquatic Sports Centre in Puerto de la Cruz yesterday, following their impressive performance at the recent Spanish Lifesaving and Rescue Championships in Cantabria.
The event was led by Lope Afonso, Vice President and Tourism Minister of the Tenerife Council, alongside Sports Minister Yolanda Moliné. They congratulated the athletes, coaches, and families for their outstanding achievements and acknowledged the values of effort, perseverance, and teamwork they represent. Also in attendance were Puerto de la Cruz Mayor Leopoldo Afonso, María Rojas, the Director General of Physical Activity and Sports for the Canary Islands, and Desiré Díaz, Councillor for Tourism and Culture in Puerto de la Cruz.
The gathering celebrated the Martiánez Swimming Club’s return to prominence in national lifesaving, bolstered by the athletes’ performances across various categories.
At the Youth, Junior, and Senior Spanish Championships held on 18-19 July in Noja, athletes Guillermo Rodríguez, Áurea Martín Goya, Diego Dévora, and Ainara Díaz qualified for one of the country’s major competitions, showcasing the club’s competitive level.
Later, at the Children’s and Cadet Beach Championships on 25-26 July in Laredo, the club excelled, winning multiple individual and team medals. Juan Castañeda Quintero claimed bronze in the Cadet Surf Swim event, while Amy Elizabeth Novillo Barreiro won silver in the Children’s Nipper Race. The girls’ team also secured silver in the Nipper relay and bronze in both the Sprint Beach relay and Rescue Tube relay, earning the title of National Champions by team, highlighting the club’s commitment to nurturing young talent.
Lope Afonso remarked, “These results reflect the talent, dedication, and commitment of athletes who proudly represent Tenerife in national competitions. The Council will continue to support grassroots sports as they build values and contribute to a healthier, more cohesive society.”
Yolanda Moliné added, “The success of Martiánez Swimming Club showcases the excellent work done by our clubs, coaches, and families. We will keep fostering the best conditions for Tenerife’s athletes to reach their full potential.”
