Tenerife Imposes Fire Restrictions Due to Heatwave
New fire restrictions began at 08:00 on Thursday, 30 July, across Tenerife as temperatures soar. Level 1 measures are in effect on the northern slopes and Anaga Norte, while Level 2 restrictions cover the southern slopes and Anaga Sur.
These measures limit outdoor fire use, activities that could create sparks, and access to forest tracks and recreational areas. In Level 2 zones, stricter rules include a complete ban on access to recreational areas, camping sites, and the use of motor vehicles on forest paths.
The tightening of regulations coincides with rising temperatures and dry conditions, aimed at preventing fires and ensuring emergency services can respond effectively.
Affected Areas
According to the Cabildo’s Department of the Environment and Sustainability, Level 1 restrictions apply to the northern regions and Anaga Norte, whereas Level 2 encompasses the southern slopes and Anaga Sur. These rules will remain until the risk subsides.
Prohibitions Under Level 1
In Level 1 areas, outdoor fires—including barbecues and bonfires—are banned, as is smoking in public spaces like camping sites and tracks. The use of spark-producing machinery is also prohibited, along with fireworks and pyrotechnics.
Additional Restrictions in Level 2
Level 2 restricts all Level 1 rules, with further prohibitions on motor vehicles in forest tracks and bans on hunting with shotguns island-wide. Access to recreational areas and camping sites is closed, and sporting events in these zones are suspended. The Chimaque Viewpoint in Anaga is also off-limits.
Public Safety Recommendations
The Island Council urges everyone to be cautious and avoid actions that might ignite a fire, even outside the highest-risk areas. In case of a fire, access routes may be closed to facilitate emergency response. Residents and visitors are advised to follow emergency service guidance and report any signs of smoke or fire immediately by calling 112.
