Eco-Conscious Body Paint Removal at Las Palmas Event
On Sunday morning, around 500 people, adorned in vibrant colours to honour the Pride flag, paraded naked in front of Santa Ana Cathedral, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, under the watchful eye of photographer Spencer Tunick. However, the joyful atmosphere turned tense as participants began removing their body paint.
While most opted to wash off the paint at home, others chose to rinse off in the sea, turning parts of Las Canteras beach into a striking blue. This led to outrage among local residents and beachgoers, who questioned why participants weren’t using designated showers to clean off.
Though Tunick’s body paint is biodegradable, non-toxic, and water-soluble, experts warn against washing it off in the ocean. Biodegradability means it can decompose safely in controlled environments, like sewage treatment plants, not in natural ecosystems like the sea.
The issue arises when large numbers of people wash off simultaneously, leading to a sudden influx of paint that can harm marine life. The organic compounds in the paint may promote harmful microorganism growth that depletes oxygen levels, threatening delicate coastal ecosystems.
To mitigate environmental impact, event organisers typically set specific protocols for paint removal. Proper cleaning involves using available showers or cleaning at home with water, mild soap, and a sponge, ensuring any waste reaches sewage systems and is treated before entering the ocean.
