Partial Solar Eclipse to be Visible in Fuerteventura on August 12
A partial solar eclipse will take place on August 12, observable in Fuerteventura from 19:57, with about 70% of the sun’s disk covered. While the full eclipse will occur across parts of the Iberian Peninsula, residents in the Canary Islands are urged to use proper protective glasses for viewing.
Oswaldo González, an astrophysicist at the Museum of Science and the Cosmos in Tenerife, warned against makeshift methods like smoked glass or X-rays, as they do not adequately protect the eyes.
In the Canary Islands, the eclipse will be visible until sunset. González noted that the island’s terrain, particularly in mountainous areas and ravines, may obstruct visibility.
The Museum will distribute free approved eclipse glasses starting July 27, as part of a campaign to encourage safe viewing practices during this astronomical event.
This eclipse is part of a series of significant solar eclipses that will be visible from Spain in 2026, 2027, and 2028, with two total eclipses and one annular eclipse expected. A partial lunar eclipse will also be visible from the Canary Islands two weeks later.
