Asamblea Majorera Prepares for 50th Anniversary with Calls for Continued Action
Asamblea Majorera unveiled new promotional material for their upcoming 50th anniversary celebrations in March 2027 during a recent event on Los Pozos beach.
Elsa Quesada, the organisation’s Co-ordinator for Organisation and Training, highlighted key initiatives that have shaped the party’s history over the last five decades. She emphasised their ongoing commitment to protecting the environment, citing significant campaigns against military exercises and NATO operations on the island.
Quesada also pointed out the organisation’s efforts in preserving Fuerteventura’s natural heritage. She praised the establishment of the Biosphere Reserve and the push for a national park in arid zones. “Defending our territory is crucial,” she stated, explaining that the landscape, culture, and identity are part of a legacy to be preserved for future generations.
She reaffirmed the need for vigilance against projects that could harm the island, such as rare earth mining. “We believe Fuerteventura’s development shouldn’t compromise our natural values,” Quesada asserted.
Moreover, Quesada reiterated that Assembly Majorera has consistently fought against measures like adding over 55,000 tourist beds and sand extraction projects, advocating for sustainable development that respects the island’s limits.
As the anniversary approaches, Quesada urged a collective remembrance of the party’s history and the contributions of its members. She described the promotional material as a symbol of 50 years of commitment and identity, designed to engage closely with the local community. Key events, including a celebration titled “Fuerteventura is written in feminine,” will honour the women who have significantly contributed to the party since its inception.
