Concerns Over Port Management Costs in Fuerteventura
Blas Acosta, Secretary General of the Socialist Party (PSOE) in Fuerteventura, has urged the Canary Islands Government to address ongoing issues at the Port Authority of Las Palmas, which are costing local residents significantly. Acosta highlighted that the proposal to separate the ports of Puerto del Rosario and Arrecife from Las Palmas to form a new port authority has only complicated matters further.
He claims that the current president of the Port Authority, Beatriz Calzada, has failed to manage crucial projects, including the renovations needed at the PIF and the Schengen installations at Puerto del Rosario. As a result, residents of Fuerteventura are paying up to 78% more in transport costs for goods.
Acosta called attention to the fact that Spain has 28 port authorities managing 46 major ports, suggesting that creating an additional authority is impractical. He proposed merging the Port Authorities of Las Palmas and Santa Cruz de Tenerife for better efficiency and economic growth in the Canary Islands.
He emphasised that the incompetence in the current leadership continues to hinder progress for local economies, and only the Government can replace Calzada through the Ministry of Transport, as outlined in the country’s port legislation.
Lastly, Acosta suggested that, instead of creating new authorities, the Government of the Canary Islands should consider transferring the management of Morro Jable and Corralejo to facilitate necessary investments in crucial maritime routes to Gran Canaria and Lanzarote.
