Feijóo Promises Strong Support for Canary Islands Amid Migration Crisis
Alberto Núñez Feijóo, the leader of Spain’s Popular Party, declared on Friday that the Canary Islands should embody “the best image” of Spain. Speaking at an event to introduce Carmen Pérez as the party’s candidate for the Santa Cruz de Tenerife mayoralty, he pledged vital financial support for the archipelago, recognising its status as an Outermost Region (RUP) and highlighting the need for a robust migration policy.
Feijóo criticized the current government’s handling of the region, insisting that the Canary Islands should not be “abandoned or associated with dark characters” but instead celebrated for their “talent and prosperity.” He outlined the essential resources the islands require, including housing construction, improved public services, and job opportunities.
The party leader emphasized the importance of a “firm, orderly, and European” migration policy, asserting that if the central government cannot manage irregular immigration, it must take responsibility rather than shifting the burden onto the Canary Islands. Under Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, approximately 173,000 migrants have arrived in the region, a stark contrast to just 2,800 during Mariano Rajoy’s administration.
Feijóo expressed unwavering support for the Canary Islands, stating, “I will not leave the region alone in a crisis.” He praised the efforts of the local Popular Party, describing them as a “great team” with talent and determination, and highlighted Pérez’s passion for Santa Cruz, calling her an exceptional candidate.
He also acknowledged Carlos Tarife, the first deputy mayor, recognising his valuable contributions and reaffirming the party’s progress over the past four years. Feijóo likened the importance of strong teamwork in politics to a football team, stating that everyone has a role to play, even those who may not always be on the field.
