San Bartolomé Allocates €350,000 for Student Transport and Accommodation Grants
The San Bartolomé Council has launched its application process for transport and accommodation grants for the 2025-2026 academic year, with a total budget of €350,000. This year, the maximum grant per student has been increased from €1,000 to €1,200.
Mayor Isidro Pérez emphasised the council’s commitment to supporting local students, stating, “We fulfil our promise to families by raising these grants. We understand the significant financial burden of studying outside our municipality and want to support those investing in their future.”
San Bartolomé is now the leading municipality on Lanzarote for these educational grants. Pérez added that the increase aims to ensure that no young person has to forgo their studies due to financial constraints.
Education Councillor Estefanía Luzardo noted these grants are vital for families, allowing students to pursue their studies with confidence, wherever they are based. She mentioned the need to match the rising costs of transport and accommodation, reinforcing the council’s ongoing support.
Applications open on 16 July and close on 27 August. They can be submitted in person at the General Registry of the Town Hall, located in Plaza León y Castillo, or at the Municipal Offices in Playa Honda, from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM, or through the town’s electronic office.
Eligible applicants are students living in San Bartolomé for at least 12 months who are enrolled in official Bachillerato, vocational training, or university studies at recognised institutions outside the municipality. The grants are divided into two categories: transport assistance for students studying off the island and accommodation support for those relocating for their education. Both types of aid can be combined, with each student potentially receiving up to €1,200, provided they meet the requirements.
The council urges students and families to apply within the stipulated timeframe, promising assistance through the Education Department or via the municipal website. This initiative underscores the council’s commitment to education as a fundamental element for community development, ensuring access to higher education for all students, irrespective of their financial situations.
