Janubio Celebrates 40 Years of Folklore in Playa Blanca
Janubio, the renowned musical group from Las Breñas, marked its 40th anniversary with a vibrant performance in Playa Blanca on Sunday. Known for its cultural ties to the Virgen del Carmen celebrations, the group showcased a thoughtfully curated repertoire of Canarian folklore, featuring esteemed artists Begoña Quintero, Iván Díaz, and brothers José Manuel and Leo García Corujo.
Hosted by Leandro Martín, the Encuentro de Música Popular was a heartfelt tribute for a crowd eager to celebrate the group, which has been led by Clotildo Martín since its founding in 1986. Among the original members still active are Clotildo Martín (strings) and Leonardo Cabrera (vocals).
The event also highlighted the new generation of musicians nurtured by Janubio, including young talents like Fabio Cabrera and the spirited Aarón Fusari, who exhibited his skills on the timple. Although Elena Acosta, president of Janubio, was unable to perform, her colleagues conveyed their warm regards.
In a show of gratitude, Janubio took time during the performance to thank everyone who has supported the group over the years. Daniel Medina, the Councillor for Festivities in Yaiza, received a symbolic gift of alpargatas representing the group’s journey and its continual commitment to music and tradition.
Yaiza praised Janubio’s contributions to Canarian folklore and its relentless dedication to promoting popular music among the youth. The group is set to continue sharing their love for the municipality through traditional songs, including malagueñas, folías, and isas, celebrating the poetic essence of local culture.
Playa Blanca also wrapped up its first weekend of festivities with impressive participation. The town hall announced the screening of the Spain vs. France World Cup match on Tuesday 14 July at 8 PM on a giant screen in the village square. Consequently, the Yaiza seniors’ playback event has been rescheduled to Wednesday 15 July at 8 PM, followed by a performance from the group Drupe.
