Historic Celebration in La Laguna as San Benito Abad’s Pilgrimage Honours San Cristóbal
La Laguna is marking a historic moment today as the Romería Regional de San Benito Abad pays its first official tribute to San Cristóbal, the town’s patron saint. This significant act brings together the two main protectors of the city.
The festivities began at 11:00 am, attracting thousands of pilgrims dressed in traditional Canarian attire, alongside decorated carts and folk groups. At 1:30 pm, the procession will pause at the Santa Iglesia Catedral to present a floral and musical offering to San Cristóbal.
As one of the most important cultural events in the Canary Islands, the Romería showcases the region’s rich traditions. Participants will enjoy local produce like potatoes, gofio, fruits, cheese, meat, and wine, celebrating a centuries-old custom that exemplifies Canarian hospitality.
A highlight of the day is the emotional tribute at 1:30 pm when the procession arrives at the cathedral square. Here, folk groups will perform traditional Canarian music, and participants, along with local officials, will offer their tributes to San Cristóbal in front of the cathedral.
This heartfelt gesture symbolizes the unity of San Benito Abad, the patron saint of farmers, and San Cristóbal, the town’s protector, merging faith, tradition, and local identity.
