The Fuerteventura Chamber of Commerce has expressed concerns about the lack of transparency regarding investments from the Port Authority of Las Palmas. While they acknowledge the authority’s commitment to developing the Port of Puerto del Rosario, they emphasise the need for a thorough review of the 2027 Business Plan to understand the actual investment effort for the island.

The Chamber points out that a significant portion of the announced investments pertains to projects already listed in previous Business Plans, many of which remain unexecuted. They highlight the allocation of €2 million for improving facilities to enable a future maritime link between Puerto del Rosario and Tarfaya—a vital initiative for the island’s economic diversification—which has yet to materialise despite being included in past budgets.

Additionally, the expansion of the commercial dock by 250 metres, crucial for boosting the port’s operational capacity and competitiveness, has also been part of previous planning efforts.

According to the Chamber, it is essential to differentiate between new initiatives and those that have been postponed. This clarity would help ascertain the actual new investment Fuerteventura will receive in 2027.

A key development highlighted in the plan is the electrical connection at Puerto del Rosario, seen as a significant new investment that will modernise the port facilities and enhance energy efficiency, aligning with decarbonisation goals.

Chamber President Juan Jesús Rodríguez Marichal stated, “Planning is important, but the real measure of commitment is effective investment execution. Fuerteventura needs completed projects, not repeated plans that don’t lead to action.”

The Chamber is also preparing a comparative report on past Business Plans from the Port Authority, aiming to assess the progression of proposed investments for Puerto del Rosario, their completion status, and the timeline for important projects.

They stress that transparency in planning and adherence to commitments are vital for building trust and ensuring Fuerteventura has the infrastructure needed to enhance its competitiveness.
