Fuerteventura Acquires New Recycling Bins to Boost Waste Collection
The Cabildo of Fuerteventura has purchased 470 new side-loading bins aimed at enhancing selective waste collection across the island, funded by the Next Generation EU programme. This investment totals €709,227.
Half of the new bins will be used for lightweight packaging, while the other half will serve paper and cardboard collection, as announced by the Cabildo on Thursday.
The bins will be gradually integrated into the island’s network as part of a new selective collection contract currently being processed. Enrique Pérez, the island’s Waste Councillor, stated, “This investment will help us improve Fuerteventura’s recycling network and provide a more efficient service to residents.”
He also noted that the new contract will bolster resources to meet the growing demand for waste collection due to the island’s increasing population. Following this acquisition, the total number of side-loading containers will rise from over 1,300 to nearly 1,800, increasing the collection capacity by over 35%.
Additionally, the new contract will include two new side-loading trucks, allowing for expanded services and improved collection routes throughout all municipalities.
Fuerteventura has seen the highest increase in the collection of lightweight packaging and paper/cardboard across the Canary Islands in recent years. It also leads the region in glass recycling, reflecting strong collaboration between local authorities and the community.
Pérez emphasised the community’s commitment to recycling, stating that Fuerteventura’s impressive results are made possible by residents’ involvement.
