Major Revamp for Calle Fernando Guanarteme in Las Palmas
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is set for a significant transformation with the sixth phase of the renovation of Calle Fernando Guanarteme. Funded by the Gran Canaria Cabildo’s Cooperation Plan, this project will enhance urban infrastructure between Viriato and Pizarro streets.
Urban2020 S.L. has been awarded the contract, amounting to €1,177,263.19. Mauricio Roque, the city’s planning councillor, stated the renovations will create a more accessible, safe, and balanced environment for pedestrians, residents, shops, and vehicles.
The project aims to reduce traffic speed through the reorganisation of road sections, ultimately improving road safety and fostering coexistence between pedestrians and vehicles. Over 7,000 square metres will be redesigned, including around 3,200 square metres for pedestrian areas, 3,400 for vehicle traffic, and 460 for parking and loading zones.
Universal accessibility is a priority, with new traffic lights featuring acoustic signals to assist visually impaired individuals throughout the area.
The urban greening element will introduce new landscaped zones with tree species suited to the environment, including Ficus Alii and Brachychiton acerifolius, which will be planted with automated irrigation systems, enhancing the area’s climate comfort.
Modernisation efforts will include LED street lighting with telemanagement systems, along with a solar-powered Passenger Information Panel offering voice announcements to assist those with visual impairments.
Additionally, the project includes comprehensive upgrades of existing infrastructures, replacing faulty sewage connections and installing new supply and drainage networks, public lighting, and telecommunication conduits, thus minimising the need for future subsurface work.
The renovation will be implemented in phases to minimise disruptions for residents and businesses, ensuring continuous access and traffic flow throughout the works.
