Tenerife’s Cabildo has enacted Level 2 fire prevention measures due to soaring temperatures, expected to reach up to 37.3 degrees Celsius, particularly in the southern part of the island and the municipality of El Rosario.

As part of these precautions, access to recreation areas and camping sites is prohibited, along with the use of motor vehicles on forest paths. All sporting events and pilgrimages in these areas are also banned until July 10.

Cabildo President Rosa Dávila has urged residents to adhere to recommendations from authorities, underscoring the high risk of wildfires presented by the extreme heat. “We’ve escalated measures to reduce the risk of fire and ensure public safety,” she said.

Blanca Pérez, Councillor for Natural Resources, Sustainability, Safety, and Emergencies, highlighted that activating Level 2 is crucial for protecting woodlands. “This proactive step aims to prevent any incidents during this vulnerable time,” she noted, also calling for the suspension of any forestry work or activities using machinery that may cause sparks.

Open fires are banned across all areas, including barbecues and camping stoves, to protect natural resources. The use of any fireworks is strictly forbidden, along with smoking in recreational zones and public paths.

The Level 2 measures specifically prohibit motor vehicle access to forest tracks for recreational purposes and all outdoor events. Additionally, hunting activities have been suspended.

Residents are encouraged to stay hydrated, use sunscreen, and limit outdoor activities, particularly during peak heat hours from noon to 4 p.m. Special care is advised for vulnerable populations, including children, the elderly, and those with chronic health issues.
