Extreme Heat Forecast for Fuerteventura and Other Canary Islands
A heatwave currently gripping the Canary Islands is expected to intensify, with temperatures in Fuerteventura potentially reaching 40°C in the coming days. Hot, dry air from North Africa is impacting the archipelago, especially in Gran Canaria’s higher regions and the interior of eastern islands.
This warm weather is predicted to last at least until Friday, with temperatures beginning to drop progressively, although this will depend on weather model updates.
Today, areas in the western and southern parts of Gran Canaria could see temperatures exceeding 37°C, with some spots hitting 40°C. From Tuesday, the heat is set to spread across the northern median areas of the island, where temperatures may reach 36°C. Similarly, in southern Fuerteventura, interior valleys could hit 36°C, with some regions possibly reaching 38°C and in rare cases, 40°C.
In Lanzarote and La Graciosa, highs of 34°C to 36°C are expected in the interior and eastern areas on Tuesday and Wednesday. Tenerife, particularly in the south and west, may experience temperatures around 34°C from Monday, escalating to 36°C to 38°C on Tuesday and Wednesday.
La Gomera is forecasted to reach 34°C in the highlands today, with further rises to 38°C in eastern mountain areas. By Tuesday and Wednesday, general temperatures of 36°C are anticipated across the higher regions, with lower areas in southern parts reaching around 34°C. El Hierro and La Palma will be relatively cooler, with temperatures reaching over 32°C in their highlands.
Northern coasts of the mountainous islands and the western shores of eastern islands will enjoy slightly cooler conditions due to a layer of moist ocean air. However, unusually high minimum nighttime temperatures are expected, particularly in the higher and southern areas, which could disrupt sleep and recovery.
