Sustainable Excellence Award for Loro Parque Group in Tenerife
Loro Parque, Siam Park, and Poema del Mar have been awarded the prestigious Soy Canary Green sustainability badge by the Canary Islands’ Tourist Municipalities Association (AMTC). The accolade was presented during the first Leaders Forum at Bodega El Lomo in Tegueste, Tenerife, recognising the centres as among the top 50 organisations committed to responsible tourism in the region.
Ricardo Fernández de la Puente, the Director of Institutional Relations for Grupo Loro Parque, highlighted the award as a testament to the team’s daily efforts to promote environmentally friendly tourism. He noted the group’s strategic partnership with the Soy Canary Green initiative, which aims to leverage their extensive experience in animal conservation and environmental education for the benefit of the Canary Islands.
This recognition underscores the group’s long-standing leadership in environmental management within the tourism sector. Notably, in 2021, Loro Parque became the world’s first zoo to achieve a negative carbon footprint, accredited by the Canary government, by generating more clean energy than it consumes.
In 2024 alone, the group’s Bye Bye Plastic project prevented the creation of 200 tonnes of single-use plastic. Additionally, the parks hold several international sustainability certifications, including EMAS, ISO 14001, Biosphere Sustainable, and the Sustainability Award from the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA).
The Leaders Forum Soy Canary Green has emerged as a vital platform for discussing the sector’s significant challenges, bringing together businesses, professionals, and institutions from the archipelago. During the event, the AMTC also recognised 20 ambassadors from various sectors for their efforts in promoting sustainable tourism in the islands.
