Santa Cruz de Tenerife will host the twelfth edition of the Santa Cruz Extreme this Saturday, 17 October. This event is a highlight in the Canarian mountain running calendar, turning the trails of the Anaga Rural Park into a venue for a day of sport that promotes competition and environmental respect.
Organised by Gesport Canarias with support from the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Sports Service and the Santa Cruz Sustainable Foundation, the race offers four distances: 42, 25, 18, and 10 kilometres, catering to various fitness levels. Participants will traverse some of the most iconic sites in Anaga, a designated Biosphere Reserve.
Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez noted that the Santa Cruz Extreme is a fantastic chance to showcase Anaga’s natural heritage and position the city as a venue for major sporting events while emphasising environmental protection.
Sports councillor Alicia Cebrián added that the race embodies values the council wishes to promote: sport, personal growth, and nature. The varied distances ensure that runners of all abilities can join and enjoy a unique sporting experience.
The competition will kick off at 8:00 am with the start of the main event, the XTRM 42K, at Las Teresitas beach. The XTRM 25K will begin at 9:30 am in Taganana, followed by the 18K event from Afur at 10:30 am, and finally, the 10K race from Catalanes at 11:00 am.
All routes will conclude near the Plaza de España, where much of the day’s activities will centre, including the awards ceremonies. The first runners are expected to finish by 11:50 am, with trophy presentations starting at 2:00 pm for the 10K and 18K events, followed by the 25K at 3:00 pm and the 42K at 5:00 pm. The official race closure is set for 6:30 pm.
As a pre-event activity, participants can collect their race bibs and bags on Friday, 16 October, between 10:00 am and 8:30 pm, at the esplanade in front of Plaza de España.
The Santa Cruz Extreme is also committed to environmental sustainability and the conservation of Anaga Rural Park, implementing measures to minimise the competition’s impact and uphold the natural values of the area.
