New Political Party Formed in Lanzarote
A new political party, Juntos x Lanzarote, was launched on Monday, aiming to advocate for the interests of Lanzarote and La Graciosa at various levels of government.
The founding event took place at Bodega La Florida in San Bartolomé, where members of Marea Viva, Primero Teguise, and Unidos por Yaiza signed the foundational document. The party intends to give Lanzarote a distinct voice and enhance the island’s capacity to address its needs with local and national institutions.
The representatives underscored the importance of having an independent political entity outside the major parties to prioritise the interests of these islands. Key demands include ensuring uninterrupted water supply, improvements to public transport, enhanced healthcare services, and safeguarding the future of the Insular Hospital. They also called for upgraded road infrastructure and increased funding for local issues.
Jonás Álvarez from Primero Teguise praised the organisations’ courage in this initiative to regain political influence regionally. Mame Fernández from Marea Viva emphasised that the party aims to be inclusive, focusing on consensus rather than confrontation.
Óscar Noda, the mayor of Yaiza, stated that the new formation is not against anyone but seeks to foster Lanzarote’s development, proposing a management approach entirely focused on local needs.
Jerónimo Robayna, the acting president of Juntos x Lanzarote, expressed gratitude to those involved in the project and encouraged others to join in supporting insularism. He reaffirmed the party’s goal of creating a prosperous future for Lanzarote.
The party plans to hold its founding congress after the summer and invites residents to get involved in this new political movement. Various political leaders and representatives from across the island attended the launch, highlighting broad support for the initiative.
