The Cabildo of Tenerife will downgrade its island-wide Emergency Alert Plan (PEIN) to pre-alert status at midnight on Monday, 2 November, following improved weather forecasts. This change means that the restrictions on cultural and sports facilities will be lifted. However, access to Mount Teide remains restricted due to snow and adverse conditions.
The decision comes after the Canarian Government’s General Directorate of Emergencies lowered the alert level for rain, coinciding with a yellow warning issued by the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) for Tenerife.
The reduction in the PEIN means cultural and sports venues previously closed due to expected heavy rain will now reopen, including the Heliodoro Rodríguez López Stadium, Santiago Martín Pavilion, the Exhibition Centre, and the Auditorio de Tenerife.
Despite the easing of restrictions, access to Mount Teide will still be limited because of snow at higher altitudes and potentially treacherous walking conditions on trails.
Blanca Pérez, the island’s councillor for Natural Resources, Sustainability, Security, and Emergencies, advised that while the alert level has decreased, there remains a risk of localized heavy rainfall, with up to 20 litres per square metre possible in one hour. She urged residents to remain cautious and follow self-protection guidelines.
Pérez advised against unnecessary travel and accessing forest paths or mountainous areas prone to runoff. People should also stay clear of riverbeds, slopes, and embankments that pose risks, as well as exercise caution on the roads.
The Cabildo reminded the public to heed emergency services’ guidance and stay informed through official channels for updates regarding restrictions and weather conditions.
