The Parranda Marinera de Buches is set to host a cultural event on Thursday, 27 August, in Arrecife. The event will feature a celebration of heritage alongside a guitar concert.
Kicking off at 7:00 PM at the Casa de la Cultura Agustín de la Hoz, the evening will showcase the launch of the “Recovery of Traditional Costumes” project. This ambitious initiative aims to recreate 18th and 19th-century garments related to the traditional Arrecife carnival. It will also produce marine attire from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, reflecting memories of the former Pósito de Pescadores.
The project, funded by a grant from the Canary Islands Government in 2026, aims to recover clothing, models, and sewing techniques crucial for understanding Arrecife’s maritime history. Ricardo Reguera, a researcher specialising in traditional clothing from Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, will deliver the main presentation, providing historical context about maritime dress and its societal evolution.
Joining him will be seamstress Tania Nikolova, who crafted the garments and will explain the techniques involved, as well as answer questions from the audience. The event will also include a live showcase of the costumes and a short ethnomusic performance of the classic song “Niña Bonita.” Notable attendees are expected to include Migdalia Machín Tavío, the Culture Councillor for the Canary Islands, and Abigail González Guillén, the Culture Councillor for Arrecife.
Following the presentation, a guitar recital will take place at 9:30 PM at the association’s social headquarters on Calle Ico. Young musician Aarón Vera Cabrera will perform a 50-minute programme encompassing music from the Baroque period to the 20th century, highlighting the expressive potential of classical guitar.
