The council in Santa María de Guía, Gran Canaria, has cancelled the livestock fair scheduled for this Sunday as part of the Virgin Festival, due to a heat warning in the Canary Islands.
Although the fairgrounds are not above 400 metres in altitude—where the highest risk is typically found—the decision was made to ensure the welfare of participating animals. Most of the livestock comes from higher areas of the municipality, potentially exposing them to elevated temperatures during transport and while at the Beatriz Mendoza Rivero pavilion.
Alejandra García, councillor for the Primary Sector, emphasised that “the safety and welfare of the animals must come before any other consideration.” She noted that the weather situation “advises caution to avoid risks associated with high temperatures.”
Mayor Alfredo Gonçalves expressed gratitude for the understanding shown by farmers, residents, and visitors regarding the decision, which aligns with the recommendations from emergency authorities.
Other events in the town will proceed as planned, including the ‘De Tardeo en Guía’ gathering at Plaza Grande starting at 6:00 PM.
