The Granadilla de Abona Town Council is finalising preparations for the 31st edition of the Folkloric Showcase of the Peoples, set to take place from 17 to 23 August in El Médano. This annual event highlights Canarian traditions while featuring folk performances from various cultures worldwide.
Mayor José Domingo Regalado emphasised the event’s significance, calling it “one of the most important cultural highlights of our summer calendar and a fantastic opportunity for Granadilla de Abona to serve as a meeting point for cultures.” He encouraged locals and visitors to take advantage of the festivities that celebrate both local heritage and cultural diversity.
Culture and Festivities Councillor Carlos Abismael Díaz stated that the showcase transforms El Médano into a vibrant cultural hub, where Canarian traditions blend with international folk expressions. The programme will include educational activities, dance encounters, music, parades, and prominent performances aimed at engaging the community.
For a week, attendees can participate in workshops (with prior registration), dance gatherings, performances, and parades featuring groups from Tenerife, Ecuador, and Serbia.
The event begins on 17 August with a traditional pottery workshop running until 20 August at the Multifunctional Building M3 in El Médano, alongside an intensive Canarian folk dance workshop from 17 to 21 August.
On Wednesday, 19 August, the third Dance Encounter is scheduled to start at 8:00 PM, beginning at Paseo Picacho and continuing to El Médano’s main square. Groups participating will include the Charco del Pino’s Arches Dance, Chimiche and Las Vegas’ Rod Dances, as well as invited performances from Cintas de Los Cristianos and La Florida de La Orotava. The following day, the main square will host a Folklore Festival featuring local groups, including Aires de Abona and Guaydil, starting at 7:00 PM.
A highlight of the event on Friday, 21 August, will include street performances by Ecuador’s Cultural Foundation Ñukanchik, followed by an official ceremony with participating groups and a parade from the harbour to the main square. The official inauguration of the 31st Showcase will commence at 9:30 PM, featuring Los Majuelos from Tenerife, Ñukanchik from Ecuador, and the Folk Dance Ensemble Tucovic from Serbia.
The programming continues on Saturday, 22 August, with more street entertainment and a performance in the main square featuring Guantejina, Ñukanchik, and Tucovic at 9:30 PM. The closing act will occur on Sunday, 23 August, at 9:30 PM with “My Song in You,” performed by Tigaray alongside Luis Morera.
The 31st Folkloric Showcase of the Peoples will feature well-renowned groups. Serbia’s Folk Dance Ensemble Tucovic, founded in Belgrade in 1978, will share their cultural heritage, while Ecuador’s Cultural Foundation Ñukanchik will showcase various traditional practices.
Canarian representation will include groups such as Tigaray, Herederos de Chasna, Guantejina, and Los Majuelos, who will participate in the festival on 20 August. Tigaray, established in 1985, will also play a significant role in the closing event alongside Luis Morera.
