The Canary Islands government has expanded emergency measures ahead of Storm Bruna, which is expected to bring coastal warnings across all islands, heavy rain, and strong winds to the western islands and Gran Canaria. Pre-alerts have been issued for Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, and La Graciosa due to the anticipated weather conditions.

The storm is expected to affect the islands from Saturday, 7 November, into Sunday. According to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), the region could see intense and persistent rainfall, accumulating up to 100 litres per square metre in just 12 hours.

There are also warnings of rough seas, with waves potentially reaching four metres along the northern and western coastlines, as well as strong south-western winds, which could peak at 90 kilometres per hour in high and exposed areas.

Meteorological instability may persist into the following week due to another tropical disturbance on the way.

The Emergency Directorate has urged the public to take extra precautions, advising against approaching docks, breakwaters, and exposed coastal areas. Nautical activities should be postponed and swimming in unmonitored areas is not recommended.

In light of the rain, locals are advised to limit road travel, particularly on forest tracks, riverbeds, and ravines, due to the risk of flash floods. Parking in flood-prone areas, accessing garages or basements, and using elevators during potential flooding should also be avoided.

During a storm, people are advised to close all doors and windows, stay away from metal structures, and avoid seeking shelter under trees.

To mitigate wind damage, residents should remove pots and objects from balconies and rooftops that could fall onto streets. Drivers should exercise caution for possible road obstructions.

The Canary Islands government has assembled emergency officials, local corporations, and other entities to coordinate preventive measures, with further meetings planned for Monday to assess the storm’s development.
