Tenerife’s island council has activated the Emergency Plan (PEIN) in response to the approaching Atlantic storm Bruna, which is expected to bring heavy rain, strong winds, and potential flooding this weekend. The plan comes into effect at midnight on Sunday, November 8.
The decision follows forecasts from the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) and alerts issued by the General Directorate of Emergencies for various adverse weather phenomena. Island council president Rosa Dávila has urged the public to act responsibly, avoid unnecessary travel, and heed emergency services’ advice. “We are facing a weather event that could pose risks across the island. Prevention is critical, and community cooperation can prevent accidents and save lives,” she stated.
Blanca Pérez, the councillor for Natural Environment, Sustainability, Safety, and Emergencies, explained that the PEIN activation includes specific preventive measures in Tenerife’s natural spaces, which are particularly susceptible to weather impacts.
Access to protected natural areas, pathways, and trails will be banned from midnight on Sunday. Outdoor activities, camping areas, and recreational zones will also be closed, with hunting activities suspended and permits for activities like canyoning and climbing cancelled. Access to the Barranco de Masca and Barranco del Infierno will also be prohibited due to risks of land slips, falling trees, and rising water levels.
The council has instructed various departments to close all island-owned facilities that host cultural and public events, starting from midnight on Sunday, while allowing residents and customers access to private homes and businesses. However, if accessing these locations requires passage through closed pathways, prior consultation with local environmental agents is necessary.
The council encourages towns to activate their own Municipal Emergency Plans and implement necessary preventive measures based on the storm’s progression.
Authorities remind the public to stay informed through official channels, follow emergency instructions, and avoid dangerous areas during the storm, with restrictions remaining in place until further notice is issued regarding safety assessments and damage evaluations.
