A tragic incident during the match between CD Tenerife and FC Andorra on Monday led to the death of Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel Alameda just two minutes before the end of the game. While attempting a counter-attack near the halfway line, De Miguel was accidentally struck by opposition goalkeeper Jesús Owono, who had come out of his area to play the ball. Following the impact, players from both teams immediately called for medical assistance as De Miguel lay on the pitch.
He went into cardiac arrest on the field and received treatment for several minutes before being carried off on a stretcher to an ambulance. The game, which was 2-2 at the time, was suspended in agreement with both teams and the referee. Among the spectators were De Miguel’s wife and their young daughter, who were later joined by the player’s parents, who rushed from the mainland due to the seriousness of the situation.
Once in the Intensive Care Unit at the hospital, initial reports from CD Tenerife indicated that De Miguel was “stable but in a serious condition.” However, sources later confirmed that he did not regain consciousness. Early on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, his condition worsened due to neurological complications, resulting in his death at 8:00 am.
An official statement from CD Tenerife expressed the club’s profound grief, stating they were “broken with pain” and struggled to accept the news. They extended their support to De Miguel’s family and the fans, acknowledging the deep sadness felt across the sporting community. His family also thanked everyone for their expressions of support and requested privacy during this difficult time.
HiperDino, the supermarket chain and club sponsor, offered their condolences, calling De Miguel’s passing “unexpected, painful, and unfair.” Their marketing director, Carlos García, lamented the loss of a young man with much left to give.
The City Council of Santa Cruz de Tenerife expressed their sorrow, with Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez emphasizing that there are “no words to alleviate such a painful loss.” The sentiment was echoed by Deputy Mayor Carmen Pérez, who highlighted the need for the family to feel the city’s affection and support during this time.
The Cabildo of Tenerife also conveyed their condolences, with President Rosa Dávila expressing shock at the tragedy and stating, “Jesus was only 30 years old, with a wife, a young daughter, and a full life ahead of him.” Vice President Lope Afonso added that, while football elicits passion and belonging, humanity comes first. The Cabildo extended their sympathies to the club’s staff and supporters as well.
