Active Schools Programme Launches Sporting Activities Across Tenerife
The Active Schools programme, initiated by the Sports Department of the Cabildo de Tenerife, has launched extracurricular sports activities in 89 educational centres across the island for this academic year. Kicking off in October, the initiative will benefit 56 primary schools and 29 secondary schools, with four more schools expected to join soon. Nearly 2,000 students will participate, as highlighted by Sports Councillor Yolanda Moliné during her recent visit to the CEIP Montaña Pacho.
The programme offers two hours of free physical activity each week outside of regular school hours, aiming to meet the minimum recommended levels of exercise for young people. For primary students, the activities will focus on multi-sports, promoting basic physical skills and motor abilities through a variety of collective and individual disciplines. The programme aims to enhance physical aspects like speed, strength, elasticity, endurance, and coordination, alongside psychological benefits such as values, teamwork, and self-esteem, all in a fun and collaborative environment that supports holistic education.
Additionally, the programme will host School Sports Meetings in three regions: north, south, and the metropolitan area. These events will recognise primary schools that have demonstrated exceptional commitment and collaboration in extracurricular activities.
For secondary schools, five sporting activities will be offered: Functional Training, Urban Dance/Modern Dance, Ultimate Frisbee, Badminton, and Volleyball. The options will depend on students’ interests and the resources available at each school, with institutes encouraged to propose other popular activities. The aim is to introduce young people to a range of appealing sports, fostering inclusion, equality, participation, teamwork, and effort.
These activities are closely aligned with the physical education curriculum in secondary schools, promoting a healthy, active lifestyle and the integration of physical activities into daily routines for better quality of life.
