The Fuerteventura Tenants’ Union has organised a protest and “recovery stoppage” for Wednesday, 11 November, at 11:00 am in Puerto del Rosario. The demonstration aims to address the difficulties of accessing housing and rising rental prices on the island.
Protesters will gather at Primero de Mayo street, 64, in front of the General State Administration building. The march will proceed along León y Castillo, Avenida de la Constitución, Las Rotondas shopping centre roundabout, and Calle Profesor Juan Tadeo Cabrera, before returning to the starting point.
The union is calling on citizens, social organisations, and workers to join the protest. They demand the effective implementation of the Housing Law, the declaration of areas with strained residential markets, reductions in rental prices, and stricter regulations on holiday lets.
The union claims Fuerteventura is facing a severe housing crisis, linking the situation to the rising cost of rent, the expansion of properties for tourist rental, and an insufficient supply of public alternatives. They emphasise, “many homes without people and many people without homes”, demanding immediate action from local authorities.
Among their key demands is the application of national housing regulations in the Canary Islands, particularly the declaration of strained residential market areas in Fuerteventura. The union believes this would enable intervention in regions facing housing access challenges and urges the Canary Islands government and local administrations to promote its use.
Additionally, they are asking for regulations to help lower rent prices, ensuring housing costs remain manageable relative to local wages.
Another focus of their demands is to limit the establishment of holiday rentals in residential areas. They argue that part of the properties currently used for tourist lettings should be returned to stable residential use.
They also insist that no evictions of individuals in socio-economic vulnerability occur without prior provision of adequate, permanent housing alternatives.
The Tenants’ Union continues to maintain regular contact and assemblies to coordinate mobilisations and address rental-related inquiries.
