The housing movement in the Canary Islands will take to the streets again on Saturday following the rejection of the government’s housing decrees in Congress. Protesters will demand that public institutions fulfil their “constitutional obligation” to implement “real” measures ensuring access to “decent” housing.

In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the demonstration will start at 11:00 am from Plaza de La Feria. It will progress along Luis Doreste Silva, reaching León y Castillo, home to the regional government, before returning to Plaza de La Feria.

In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, another protest will also kick off at 11:00 am, starting from the Government subdelegation on Calle Méndez Núñez. It will move through Plaza Weyler, Calle Castillo, Calle Valentín Sanz, Puente Serrador, and Avenida José Manuel Guimerá, concluding at the Presidency of the Government.

Further demonstrations are set for Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. In Lanzarote, a housing gathering will take place on Sunday from 12:00 to 14:00 in front of the old Cabildo (Casa Amarilla) in Arrecife.

Meanwhile, the Tenants’ Union in Fuerteventura has organised a protest on Saturday at 11:00 am outside the courts in Puerto del Rosario on Calle Secundino Alonso.

These protests are themed “Towards a General Strike” and are part of a broader national movement for housing, which gained momentum after the eviction of 87-year-old Maricarmen in Madrid, a case that has become emblematic for tenant rights advocates.
