A recent survey commissioned by the City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has revealed that 73.6% of residents support the MetroGuagua project, with only 5.5% opposing it and labelling it as bad. Furthermore, 3.3% consider it to be very bad. The survey results were presented this Friday.
Among supporters, 63.1% rated the high-capacity transport system as “fairly good,” while 10.5% termed it “excellent.” Mobility councillor José Eduardo Ramírez, from Primero Canarias, argues that the survey challenges the claims of critics who contend that “the city is against” the initiative.
Ramírez regards these findings as significant, countering the negative perception often amplified on social media that most residents reject the MetroGuagua. He stated, “I believe this isn’t accurate and does not reflect the views of the majority.”
He also noted the need for reflection on how online criticism sometimes drowns out genuine public dialogue. He concluded that most residents view MetroGuagua as a viable solution for mobility in Las Palmas, eagerly anticipating its completion to improve daily transport.
Ramírez reaffirmed the project’s importance, stating, “Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, like other major cities in this country, needs a high-capacity transport line,” and added, “this survey indicates that the solution is the MetroGuagua.”
In contrast, the opposition party Coalición Canaria has pledged to halt the MetroGuagua project if they come to power in the 2027 elections.
