Local authorities in Arrecife have issued a fine to the circus operating near Vía Medular after discovering it was illegally discharging sewage into the ground. Nearby residents reported unpleasant odours, prompting a police inspection that confirmed the presence of wastewater in the area.
The circus, registered in Telde, Gran Canaria, is accused of digging a trench on its site and redirecting waste from its caravans and facilities into a pit. Despite the extensive sewer network in Arrecife, the circus allegedly installed its own wastewater pipes, violating local regulations.
According to the local police report, the circus breached three specific clauses of the Canary Islands Waste Law by improperly disposing of toxic and hazardous waste, which can severely damage natural resources.
Situated close to the main courthouse in Arrecife, the circus operates on private land. Due to the potential for repeat offences, the Arrecife Council plans to notify Seprona, the Nature Protection Service of the Civil Guard, to investigate possible criminal liability, in addition to the administrative penalties it may face.
