Canarias is set to experience extreme heat on Tuesday, with temperatures soaring. The Spanish Meteorological Agency (Aemet) predicts highs could hit 40 degrees Celsius in Gran Canaria, while other islands might see temperatures around 37 degrees.
The uncomfortable heat won’t just be the daytime issue; overnight temperatures will also remain high. In many inland and southern areas, nighttime lows are expected to linger between 25 and 28 degrees, making sleep difficult for many residents.
Gran Canaria to bear the brunt of the heat
Gran Canaria will face the most intense conditions, with forecasts suggesting temperatures could reach or exceed 34 degrees in the northern highlands, and possibly hitting 38 degrees in the west, south, and east regions. In Las Palmas, temperatures are forecasted to range from 24 to 29 degrees.
Weather conditions
The day is expected to be mostly clear, with some low clouds in the north and patchy clouds developing in other areas later on. Calima, a haze caused by fine dust, will affect visibility, particularly in higher lands.
Moderate winds from the north or northeast will accompany the heat. Gardener of coastal areas might experience strong gusts, causing possible disruptions on exposed roads and seaside activities.
Sea conditions
Offshore, winds of 5 to 6 will increase to 7 occasionally in the southeast. This will lead to moderate to strong waves in the surrounding waters, with a sweltering sea swell of 1 to 2 metres coming from the north or northwest.
