Yaiza launched its inaugural Crazy Car Race on Sunday, featuring a 500-metre urban circuit comprising two straight sections, two chicanes, a ramp, and a tricky curve. Eleven handcrafted vehicles participated in the event, delighting spectators with their creative designs and impressive speeds on the main straight between La Alameda and Los Remedios squares.
Attendees of all ages thoroughly enjoyed this addition to the town’s festivities for Los Remedios, organised by the Yaiza Festival Committee. Positive feedback highlighted the creativity of the entrants and suggests the event will become a staple at future celebrations.
The race showcased sustainable, motorless vehicles propelled by inertia, sporting innovative designs. One spectator jokingly suggested that Adrian Newey, a renowned F1 engineer, could draw inspiration from the inventive creations seen in Yaiza.
The event was overseen by local artisan Pancho Ortiz, who judged the podium based on the race times of two timed runs for each vehicle and their design quality. The top three winners were Omar Perdomo with his vehicle ‘Eso es lo demás’, David Rodríguez and Iván Medina with ‘Novios enredadores’, and Gustavo Torres from Femés with ‘Laya’, designed to resemble a palm tree.
The winner, Omar Perdomo, impressed the crowd with his vehicle’s speed and his driving skills. Yaiza’s mayor, Óscar Noda, and festivities councillor, Daniel Medina, presented the prizes and thanked the Festival Committee and participants for their creativity and enthusiasm. Medina also welcomed the event by driving the pace car in a non-competitive role. The day concluded with lively entertainment from the band Defecto Venturi, as the local community enjoyed refreshments in festive stalls.
