Candelaria in Tenerife is hosting its main celebrations for the Patroness of the Canary Islands, the Virgen de Candelaria, today. However, high winds have led to the cancellation of the planned procession after the Eucharist.
Following the religious service, there was supposed to be a procession through Obispo Pérez Cáceres and Los Príncipes streets with the historical uniforms of the Gastadores. Safety concerns due to the windy weather made this impossible, although the statue of the Virgin was moved to the Basilica’s portico.
For several days, Candelaria has welcomed numerous pilgrims visiting the Virgin, with a notable increase in attendance on Friday, according to local authorities.
Today’s events began with traditional performances by the cultural association Guanchería de Los Realejos, who offered tributes at the Basilica to the Virgen de Candelaria. This was followed by runners taking part in the 35th Athletic Floral Offering to the Virgin.
Official activities kicked off at 10:45 am on Avenida de la Constitución, near the town hall, with a military parade and the arrival of a representative from the Spanish Royal Family.
Following this, a civic procession with the Municipal Banner made its way to the Basilica, led by Candelaria’s mayor, local council members, and representatives from the Teror Town Hall.
The procession included members from the Canarian Government, Cabildo, Parliament of the Canary Islands, Congress, Senate, and various municipalities, alongside diplomatic and military authorities.
Shortly after their arrival, Bishop Eloy Alberto Santiago Santiago led the Eucharistic celebration at the Basilica, featuring performances by the Coral Voces para la Esperanza Villa de Candelaria and the Las Candelas Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Silvia Alonso.
