Seventeen workers from the ‘Memoria Viva 2025’ employment plan, launched by the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, are restoring heritage sites across various municipalities on the island. Their latest focus includes the churches in Tetir and Antigua.
More than twenty locations have benefited from their efforts. According to Nuria Cabrera, the island’s Employment Minister, the project aims to improve and restore public spaces such as museums and cultural centres. “The goal is to protect Fuerteventura’s memory and identity while boosting local employment,” she stated.
Cabrera also emphasised the Cabildo’s employment initiatives, targeting sectors facing the most challenges in finding work. These plans have received an investment of €17.5 million since the start of this legislative period. The ‘Memoria Viva’ project itself has a budget of €472,000, with coordination from Fuerteventura’s museums and municipalities to enhance historical sites.
Currently, the workers are focusing on cleaning, painting, and structural consolidation of the Tetir and Antigua churches. Recently, they completed restoration work at the Molino de Los Valles de Ortega in Antigua, involving cleaning, wooden restoration, and painting.
In addition, they are undertaking maintenance at Casa Alta de Tindaya in La Oliva, including internal and external painting, window and door restoration, and patio conditioning. They are also working on improvements at the Centro de Interpretación del Parque Natural de Jandía in Pájara.
This employment plan is co-funded by the Cabildo de Fuerteventura and the Government of the Canary Islands through resources from the Canary Development Fund (FDCAN).
