Lanzarote’s Culinary Showcase at O Carballiño Festival
Ángel Vázquez, the councillor for Arts, Culture, and Tourism, has praised Lanzarote’s recent participation in the 64th Festa do Pulpo in O Carballiño. He described the event as a huge gathering that attracted people worldwide, celebrating a dish deeply connected to Lanzarote’s maritime life. “It’s a personal pride to be part of this gastronomic partnership between my birthplace and my adopted home,” he remarked.
Lanzarote was honoured as a guest territory at this year’s festival, reinforcing ties between Galicia and the Canary Islands through food, culture, and historical links from emigration. “Lanzarote’s name resonated throughout the event,” Vázquez noted, adding that commemorative T-shirts featuring Lanzarote imagery were even printed.
The island’s stand showcased a selection of its culinary heritage, offering visitors five boxes of wine, six kilos of cheese, and another six kilos of potatoes from Lanzarote. Vázquez stated, “This contribution allowed people to experience a unique part of what defines us around a table.”
He also clarified that Lanzarote’s financial support for the festival was zero. Vázquez expressed frustration at critics who seek to exploit the situation for media attention and votes, saying “politics requires rigour and clarity; it’s not about what ‘they said’.”
Additionally, he highlighted that the cultural agencies have signed agreements with local councils amounting to €306,878 for various cultural, sports, and social activities across Lanzarote’s seven municipalities. Furthermore, in 2025, they are set to invest €4.74 million in 138 social, cultural, and sports projects across Lanzarote and La Graciosa as part of their corporate social responsibility initiatives.
