Public Transport Modernisation Urged in Fuerteventura
Fuerteventura Avanza is calling on local authorities to enhance the island’s public transport by collaborating with the current service provider. The aim is to enable payment for bus tickets via credit card, mobile phones, and other electronic payment systems.
Erika Ania, a councillor from Fuerteventura Avanza in Puerto del Rosario, expressed frustration that, in 2026, passengers without a transport card still rely solely on cash for bus fares. “It doesn’t make sense that using an essential public service like a bus becomes an issue just because someone doesn’t have cash,” she stated.
The group believes this issue particularly affects occasional users, young people, and visitors unfamiliar with the existing payment methods in Fuerteventura.
Ania emphasised that modernising public transport goes beyond renewing vehicles or increasing service frequency. “Such upgrades are welcome, but modernisation should also make riding the bus easier for citizens,” she said.
The current Transport and Sustainable Mobility Plan for Fuerteventura (2023-2026) acknowledges a lack of modernisation and aims to improve digital services. Ania pointed out, “If the Cabildo sees a need to digitalise, updating payment systems should be included.”
Fuerteventura Avanza insists that implementing alternative payment options needs cooperation between the Cabildo and the service provider to identify necessary technical solutions, allowing users to choose their preferred payment method.
Ania clarified that they are not advocating for the removal of transport cards or cash, but rather the addition of options. “Those who wish to use a card or mobile should be able to ride without issues,” she noted.
The timing is significant, as the Cabildo is currently working on the process for the future concession of Fuerteventura’s regular public transport service. Fuerteventura Avanza aims for technological advancements and modern payment systems to be integrated into the upcoming public transport model.
“Fuerteventura needs modern public transport in every way. We must make taking the bus easier, more accessible, and more comfortable. While improving payment options may seem minor for the administration, it could make a huge difference for users,” Ania concluded.
