Tenerife’s Cabildo Launches Sustainable Road Management Plan After Winning ‘Sello Reduzco’
The Technical Service of Roads and Mobility in Tenerife’s Cabildo has been awarded the ‘Sello Reduzco’, recognising the effective reduction of its carbon footprint. This acknowledgement from the Ministry for Ecological Transition supports the island’s commitment to decarbonisation, covering the periods of 2020-2023 and 2021-2024, and highlights efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions linked to road management.
This achievement follows the registration of carbon footprints for 2020-2024 with the Spanish Climate Change Office. The initiative is part of a broader strategy by the Technical Service to understand and mitigate the environmental impact of maintaining over 1,400 kilometres of Tenerife’s road network.
Calculating the carbon footprint includes both direct emissions from fuel consumption and indirect emissions from electricity used in workplaces and street lighting, allowing for targeted measures to improve sustainability.
Dámaso Arteaga, the Counsellor for Roads at the Cabildo, emphasised that the ‘Sello Reduzco’ highlights their commitment to integrating sustainability into road management. He stated, “Our goal isn’t just to maintain and improve roads, but to do so while reducing environmental impact and contributing to climate change efforts.”
Arteaga also introduced the ambitious Reduction Plan 2025-2029, aiming for an 84% cut in emissions through specific measures such as upgrading the vehicle fleet, securing renewable energy supplies, enhancing energy efficiency, increasing carbon sinks through new plantings, and implementing environmental criteria in public contracts.
