Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Seeks Action Against Invasive Plant Species
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is urging the regional government to launch a campaign aimed at eradicating the invasive cat’s tail plant (Pennisetum setaceum). This fast-growing grass poses a threat to local ecosystems, particularly in vulnerable areas like protected natural spaces.
Local authorities have expressed concern over the plant’s rapid spread, which alters habitats and competes with native species. The city’s councillor for the environment, Inmaculada Medina, emphasised that coordinated efforts are essential to tackle this issue effectively.
The municipality hopes the regional government will secure funding and resources to support the campaign, which will include public awareness initiatives and collaboration with local communities.
