A TikTok video by the account @platanoconsalamihistory has shed light on a lesser-known historical connection between Canary Islands and the Dominican Republic: the long-standing migration of families from the islands to Santo Domingo. This historical migration, documented by researchers, indicates that many Dominicans may have Canary ancestry, though claims about a “high percentage of Canary DNA” need clarification.
The video asserts that numerous Dominicans have roots in the Canaries due to colonial resettlement policies, where islanders were incentivised to move to the Caribbean and settle permanently. Historical research supports this claim, highlighting that between the late 17th century and the 18th century, thousands of Canary Islanders migrated to Santo Domingo.
One key study, “Canarios en la República Dominicana” by Jerónimo González Yanes, estimates that around 5,000 Canarians arrived during this migration. Spanish authorities promoted the movement of families to boost the colony’s population and bolster agriculture.
Historian Francis Pou also discussed this migration in her work, published in the Revista de Indias in 1993, noting that Santo Domingo required settlers to address population decline, resulting in significant influxes from the Canary Islands.
A prominent example of this migration is the founding of Villanueva de San Carlos de Tenerife, also known as Villa de los Isleños, near Santo Domingo by one of the early Canary groups. This settlement contributed greatly to the local agriculture and food supply.
Authorities aimed to establish stable communities by relocating families rather than individual workers, making it easier to maintain a Spanish presence. Documented incentives varied over time, supporting the assertion made in the TikTok video about the existence of historical incentives for these migrations.
However, the claim about a specific “high percentage of Canary DNA” among Dominicans needs more nuance. While it is clear that some Dominicans have Canary ancestry, genetic studies show the population is composed of a complex mix of diverse ancestries, including African, Indigenous, and European origins. Research in the Journal of Human Genetics noted European genetic contribution but did not isolate a specific percentage from the Canary Islands.
In essence, while the historical presence of Canarian immigrants in the Dominican Republic is well-documented, the idea of quantifying a specific amount of “Canary DNA” requires further examination. This longstanding relationship continues to shape aspects of genealogy, local history, and cultural elements in the Dominican Republic today.
