Decline of August Holidays: New Trends in Travel
A recent report by Ávoris Travel Insights reveals that traditional summer holidays in August are fading. It shows that 92.7% of travellers believe the annual trend of long vacations in August is either extinct or on the decline.
Over time, families have shifted their holiday patterns. Many now prefer shorter breaks spread throughout the year, with 35.6% of people citing this change as a significant shift in their habits. Notably, more than half (56.4%) would rather take multiple short trips than endure a single extended getaway during the summer heat.
The report highlights that the influence of social media on travel decisions is also diminishing. It finds fewer travellers are swayed by the recommendations of content creators; 80.7% prefer lesser-known, tranquil spots over popular locations showcased online. Additionally, a staggering 96.8% of respondents agree that social media leads to overexposure, detracting from the authenticity of destinations.
Temperature considerations are now a crucial factor in planning trips, with 83.5% of respondents acknowledging that extreme heat impacts their travel choices. As a result, interest in beach holidays is declining, while domestic tourism is on the rise, accounting for 37.3% of preferences. Moreover, 45.5% of travellers are opting for slower, stress-reducing experiences.
With an average family budget of €2,013 for summer holidays—and 64.6% planning on spending less than €2,000—avoiding August allows families to enjoy less crowded destinations and better value for money.
