Lanzarote Sculpture Campus Launches Fifth Edition
The Lanzarote Sculpture Campus has officially kicked off its fifth edition, involving students from the University of La Laguna. On Sunday, fine arts and journalism students began their collaborative residency at the Fundación Curbelo Santana.
Activities at the campus will run until Sunday, 26th July. This week, students in fine arts will design a piece using natural elements, which will later be installed in the foundation’s sculpture park alongside works from previous years. In addition, students will attend lectures from industry professionals.
Interdisciplinary Learning Initiative
The initiative is led by fine arts lecturer Itahisa Pérez Conesa and journalism lecturer José Luis Zurita, with David Vila from the University of Miguel Hernández joining the educational team. This collaboration promotes interdisciplinary learning.
Rufina Santana, president of the foundation, expressed joy at the project’s growth alongside Francisco Curbelo. “This fifth edition shows the synergy between fine arts, journalism, and the landscape. For the first time, we also welcome two students from the mainland,” she noted.
Cultural Activities and Official Presentation
The programme included a dance session on Monday led by dancer Guadalupe Torres as part of the Traslación Festival. Following the practical class, the artistic team defined the central concept for the new sculpture.
The official presentation will take place on Wednesday, 22nd July, at the foundation’s San Bartolomé location, with support from the Cabildo of Lanzarote and San Bartolomé Town Hall.
Fundación Curbelo Santana
The Fundación Curbelo Santana is an artistic and cultural foundation founded by three artists: sculptor Paco Curbelo, painter Rufina Santana, and illustrator-designer Néstor Curbelo.
The Artists
Rufina Santana and Paco Curbelo have been professional artists for over forty years, working alongside Néstor Curbelo (Hugu) from their home and studio in Lanzarote. Their projects aim to bridge local and international artistic expressions.
